What are internships benefits and types of internships

An internship is a professional learning experience that offers meaningful, practical work related to a student’s field of study or career interest. An internship gives a student the opportunity for career exploration and development, and to learn new skills.

Some of the benefits of internships are:-

1. Gain valuable work experience

The hands-on work experience interns receive is invaluable and cannot be obtained in a classroom setting, making this one of the most important benefits of internships. Interns have the opportunity to apply acquired knowledge to real work experiences, witnessing firsthand the day-to-day job duties they can expect to encounter in their chosen field. In addition to learning the specialized skills of a particular field, transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, and computer proficiency are also obtained in an internship, fully preparing interns to enter the workforce upon graduation.

2. Develop and refine skills

You can learn a lot about your strengths and weaknesses during an internship. Internships allow for feedback from supervisors and others who are established in the field, and offer a unique learning opportunity that you may not have again as a working adult. Embrace the mistakes you make as an intern and the many things that you won’t know. Ask questions, observe, and take risks to get the most out of your internship training experience.

3. College applications

Completing an internship in high school will definitely dazzle up your college application, resume, portfolio, both in India and while applying abroad. Having practical work experience makes you stand out, and is likely to attract the eyes of a recruiter, hiring manager, or college admissions office. It shows you are motivated, dedicated, and genuinely interested in learning.

Types of Internships:-

1. Paid internships-

Paid internships exist primarily in the private sector or in large organizations that have the money to pay students to learn while they work. Given a choice of paid or unpaid internship, paid internships are definitely the internships of choice.

More and more organizations are recognizing the value of internship programs and the enormous benefit they play in the recruitment process. As these organizations work to train interns, they are also scrutinizing them on all fronts to evaluate their potential as potential future full-time employees.

2. Internships for credit-

Internships for credit require that the experience is strongly related to an academic discipline to be deemed “credit-worthy”. The main question is determining the value of the internship experience in a higher education context. Students looking to do an internship for credit usually need to have an academic sponsor to oversee and set criteria for the internship. To meet the academic component of the internship, students may be required to complete a journal, essay, or presentation during or immediately after the internship to illustrate the knowledge and skills they learned over the course of the semester.

3. Summer internships

Summer internships typically run for eight to twelve weeks long and can be full or part-time. These short-term experiences provide a real insight into what it’s actually like working in a particular job or career field. There’s ample time to get into a regular work routine and gain valuable knowledge and skills.

4. Non-profit internships

With no stockholders, shares in the annual profits or losses that are determined by the organization each year, the focus is more on providing a service. As you would expect, interns generally do not get paid when interning at a nonprofit. However, completing an internship in a nonprofit organization provides some very useful skills required by employers when seeking to hire entry-level employees in this field.

5. Co-Op (Cooperative education)

A co-op is a three-way partnership between a student, an employer, and a college or university. The main difference between an internship and a co-op experience is the length of time. While internships generally last anywhere from a few weeks to several months, co-op’s normally last one or more years. Co-Ops allow students to gain valuable work experience while also earning college credits. Many colleges endorse cooperative education by partnering with a variety of employers to provide career-related opportunities. Participating students work in jobs that relate to their majors.

6. Externships

An externship is generally shorter than an internship. Externships provide brief experiential learning opportunities for students, typically consisting of a day to a few weeks.

Externships are sometimes referred to as job shadowing, as they allow students to gain insight and knowledge in a career field of interest, by determining whether the job’s day-to-day activities and responsibilities are a good fit for their skills and interests.

7. Service Learning

Service learning requires a combination of meeting specific learning objectives by completing some type of community service work. It is usually structured as a three step process in which students outline their proposed service term and objectives, perform the service work, and then present conclusions based on an analysis of their experiences. Service learning allows students to work in organized service.
